My Bartlett's Familiar Quotations attributes this quote to Emiliano Zapata
(namsake of the Zapatista rebels in Mexico), and it goes something like
"Men of the South! It is better to die on your feet than to live on your
knees!"
Whether he borrowed it from a greek philosopher, my Bartlett's Familiar
Quotations does not say.
