113 injured at rock festival

08oct02
SIX people were taken to hospital last night and 113 others were treated by paramedics after being injured in the crowd at the M-One rock festival.
The injured included several teenagers who were caught in the mosh pit during the 10-hour gig at Sydney's Olympic Park.
An ambulance spokesman said six people were taken to Concord Hospital, including two with fractures, while many more were treated for heat exhaustion, drunkeness and minor cuts.
About 30,000 people packed into the Sydney Showground for the day-long festival, featuring Billy Idol and Midnight Oil. It started at noon, but by 9pm some of the crowd had turned sour.
Police arrested two people for drunkeness and ejected a number of others, but officers last night praised the overall crowd behaviour.

A St Johns ambulance spokesman said extra paramedics were called in to help the 42 volunteers at the site.
Manager of the M-One tour, Sean Pickwell, said some of the crowd suffered minor injuries.
"But all the injuries and arrests were alcohol-related and happened outside in the bar area," he said.
The concert gave ageing peroxide punkster Billy Idol the perfect pick-up after the debacle of his silent performance at the NRL Grand Final on Sunday night.
Headlining the festival, Idol, 47, proved he was still a crowd favourite.
Although he refused to talk to the media yesterday about Sunday's disaster -- apparently caused by a short circuit in a guitar pedal -- the British rocker did allude to it in last night's performance.
Idol thanked the day's technical crew, saying: "If it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be standing here playing.
"I know that for a fact."
The crowd, many of whom had won their tickets through a radio competition, endured an overcast and sticky afternoon before nightfall brought the headline acts they had all come to see: Idol, Midnight Oil and Garbage.
Earlier in the day more than 20 local and international bands such as The Whitlams, Tea Party and the Goo Goo Dolls entertained the unusually sedate crowd.
The all-new three-city festival, which began in Brisbane on Saturday, is costing its sponsor, radio network Austereo, a dollar or two. It is reported to be going to lose more than $1 million.
Because so many fans won tickets, it seemed the rest, who paid $94 for the privilege, were in the minority.
"You never make money in the first year," Pickwell said, who manages both the M-One tour and its sister pop festival, the successful Rumba.
"We're not just a regular promoter. There's goals for the radio station as well as being a promotion. It's about making a fun vibe and a party for the listeners."
Pickwell said he didn't believe his festival was in competition with other established multi-band tours. Other festivals, The Big Day Out, Homebake and Livid, are promoted by national radio network Triple J.

Powderworkers,

The story appears online in the Daily Telegraph at the following html:

As for Billy Idol...the man has been a loser for a number of years.

Personally, any band that performs at a sporting event without making a
political statement is a SELLOUT.

Yes that includes U2, Sheryl Crow (apparently she's going for a 2nd
appearance during our baseball playoffs), Aerosmith...please feel free to add
to my list.
