Damien,
Did it occur to you that the term "most influential" is merely a cover for
NOT saying "most popular" or "best of all time"? Out with cliches ... in
with euphamisms!
As an information scout by nature and profession I can only say that if
Emineminem really wants "most influential" they are asking the wrong
population. Instead of taking a listener's poll they should be asking
young artists (such as your highly anointed self) who influenced them, then
ask those influential artists and so on and on until the trails begin to
converge.
Oh horrors! They might get a bunch of esoteric and niche market and
regional and "oldies" and other mass-market unplayable "artist's artists"
for their results! Much easier to hold an on-line popularity contest among
people not yet born when Sid and Nancy died. Just limit the spread to
commercial stuff from the last ten years and call that the final word on
influence.
- Kate (who takes being polled very seriously of course ...)
