Ummm... actually, this happens several time a year, *every* year.
Antarctica drops off large icebergs all the time. Has since the thaw of the
last great ice age. It's not getting significantly smaller though, 'cause
it's still pretty bloody cold down there.

Global warming is occuring, but it's impact is still not very well known.
As far as anyone can tell the best evidence lies on the tops of mid-latitude
mountains, not at the poles. The ice cap on top of Kilamanjaro (sp?) has
shrunk from 25 sq. mi. in 1910 to just 2.5 sq. mi. last year. This sort of
indicator seems not only to point to clearer evidence of global warming, but
also to the fact that it may be so tied to the natural order of things that
we may not be able to stop it no matter what.

Antarctica, however, will go on being Antarctica for a very long time to
come.

I can't find the headline on yahoo again, b/c its from
yesterday, and I'm too tired now to locate it
elsewhere to back it up...
but there was an ice sheet in Antarctica that was
about the size of Rhode Island, had been there since
the Ice Age, and now.... its broken up. gone. We are
not making this up, folks. global warming is getting
out of hand.
