Midnight Oil

what we have seen with the Oils is not even the worst.

I go to a concert called the Bridge School Benefit concert every year. it has no presale but prime tickets are available on StubHub, eBay, etc., days before the sale has even started. they are about $175 face value and they go for upwards of $1000. all by insiders - season ticket holders, sponsors, VIPs who have access before the public. and I am talking about dozens of tickets. I get up at 3am every year and I have never gotten one. I do end up getting them eventually through ..... insiders :). except the people I know are honest and sell them at face.

no doubt, some artists do care, but the system as a whole doesn't. so when PJ or the Oils try to do something, they too are working against the system, just like us.

as example, they could be selling thru a less known site for which bots don't exist. but they can't because they don't decide who to sell thru. the venues do. in fact in the US, Clear Channel who owns TM also owns venues. which means that venues can't do anything either. you could be fining sites like StubHub. imagine if someone had a site that sold drugs. the police would be onto them in a flash. if scalping is illegal, why don't they shut down StubHub? because they don't care. they spend millions fighting a losing battle to torrent sites but not a dime to fight scalpin g. here's an idea: make tickets copyrighted. who would oppose this legislation? it will probably pass. I admit it is stupid, but hey, we have lots of stupid laws.

you are right. the best solution is for us to not buy. but that will never happen.

Well the people who either don't get tickets or end up paying exorbitant prices care, but I suspect you mean
nobody who can do anything about it cares.  I know some artists care - if only because they may feel that the
money going to the scalpers should be theirs.

I remember Pearl Jam had a huge feud with Ticketmaster years
ago,  but I don't think anything ever really got solved.  I remember seeing Bruce Springsteen back in 1980 playing
an incredible four hour show back and telling the fans that if they paid more than $12.50
to see his show they'd been ripped off.  Point being the only real way to stop scalpers is to not buy from them.
Easier said than done, I guess.

the biggest issue is that ultimately nobody cares. the artists get paid, the venues get paid, the ticketing agencies get paid

Someone just posted this article on the Powderworkers FB page:

thump.vice.com
At 10AM on a Friday morning in April, several friends and I jumped on Ticketmaster's website and mobile app. Tickets for the Madison Square Garden stop of Radiohead's ...

Huge scam.  Funny how scalpers are able to have bots that fly through the process and grab everything despite definitely being bots.  At the least TM gets to sell tickets twice - the cynic in me says it's a cartel with full TM participation.
Also thinking that we who went into grab Atlanta tickets got a bit fortunate as the Oils likely weren't on the radar for high demand tickets.  Evidently they're on the radar now.
Take care.

My bewilderment exactly. What a weird little adventure it was this morning getting tickets. And your accounting of Stubhub BS just now confirms the rat I was smelling while buying.

I guess 15 years (since the last time I cared so much about getting concert tickets and back then, guess who for!) has brought some changes.

I know it's baffling to me.  How did they snap up so many so fast?  I had to go through those stupid robot pictures numerous times before getting two tickets way up in the mezzanine.

That's pretty disgusting! No wonder I couldn't get loge tickets - there are only 6 rows of them to begin with. I don't know how they do it, considering all these I'm not a robot pictures you have to mark....

I know a lot of you may belong to the Powderworkers FB page, but if not wanted to share this unbelievable info.
The Wiltern only holds 1,850.

"Just looked at StubHub as of 1:30pm PST for the Los Angeles show at The Wiltern...There are 232 floor tickets, 91 loge tickets, and 96 Mezzanine tickets available from $76-$200 per ticket. That is 419 tickets just from the allocated presale tickets. This scalping is getting so ridiculous. There really needs to be a fix of the whole system."
