Hi,

Did he actually ring up the PM or did he pretend?

I recall seeing a U2 concert in Sydney in November, 1993 and BONO did the same thing.  He had a phone (no phone box) on stage and made a call during the show.  He rang a taxi company and asked for a ride home. The night before I was told he rang the Australian cricket captain, Allan Border.  AB thought it was BS and just hung up on him.  Not 100% on that one though.  On other parts of the U2 USA tour he rang the white house and asked for President BUSH…

Later,

SK

Re: telephone box - that's brilliant, Bruce!

Much as I love many other bands around the traps, none would have the wit to pretend to ring up a PM like that.

PG was never shy about mentioning the Aus PM at shows, but one particularly reference to Malcolm Fraser, in a particular live show from the early 80's, always seems to stand out for me.

When I saw them in 85 the stage had an old telephone box on it that PG used to call then PM, Bob Hawke, for a little chat.

I clicked over to PG's website to see if he had posted any comments on Whitlam's death. PG hasn't (yet), but the "About" section says he's working on a memoir to be released in 2015! Apologies if this is old news.

Cheers,

Sad news (for those on the progressive side of Aus politics)

He scored at least one mention in Oils songs -

Gough was tough 'til he hit the rough,

Uncle Sam and John were quite enough.
