Hi Mike,

My answer is just an educated guess. I don’t think any of the guys were in a full on Beatles Cover Band.  However when the original 3 members (Rob, Jim, Andrew) were at high School and formed their 1st Band, Beatle mania would have been coming to an end.  They would have been about 15yo when the Beatles broke up in 1970.  For most people and musos of that era, the Beatles were a huge musical influence.  So while they were developing their own style and writing their own songs they also played some covers.  4 of the Beatles songs on that set list. (Birthday, Back in the USSR, Honey Pie, Ob La di Ob La Da) are from the Beatles self titled double LP (White album) . This LP according to some Beatles Purists was their best album.  I am pretty sure their was a quote by Rob HIRST at the exhibition which said they were influenced by several styles of music and bands whilst they developed their own style.

I also have read a review done by Jim Moginie.  He did the review of the remastered version of cold Chisels Breakfast at Sweethearts CD.  He stated when MO recorded the Bird Noises EP at Byron Bay in 1980 the band crossed paths with Cold Chisel.  He said they stayed up late one night playing Beatles, ABBA and whatever they wanted.

Just enjoying themselves playing music they liked.  Hope this has helped.

Anyone else please feel free to share your thoughts.

Simon - that was great!  You did a fantastic job putting it together.  Thanks so much for sharing.

One question - what would be the reason for the set list with what appeared to be all Beatles songs?

Was one or some of the guys in a Beatles cover band pre-Oils?

Mike
