I am a moderator (well ... one of them) and my position on this is as follows

1. there are a few moderators spread around the world. we do not communicate on a regular basis and by and large each is left to act independently.
2. we all differ in our propensity to intervene but as a whole we are all on the side of letting the list run itself and believe that intervention should be an exception and should be done sparingly
3. unless we move to a fully moderated list, there is no way to prevent non Oils content and even if we did, where does one draw the line? it is not at all black and white. This is particularly difficult when we are dealing with a band who spent 25 years putting a musical backdrop  to social and current affairs commentary. a rule of thumb I try to use is this: if the post directly refers to the Oils - as a band or as individuals - then it is related. if the linkage is topical (e.g. environment, aboriginal rights or any topic referred to in a song) but there is no direct mention or involvement, then it is NMOC
4. non Oils posts should be preceded with NMOC.
5. what to do when someone posts an NMOC? in most cases there will be a few responses before any moderator (or other members) could determine it is should be taken offline. the way I handle it is to try and let the thread run its course. in most cases, it will die within a few posts and become a non issue. if the the thread remain active for longer, or the posts are no longer on topic, or the tone becomes aggressive/insulting/provocative then I would intervene.

specifically to the case here:

1. the post was NMOC
2. the tone of a specific reply was somewhat provocative IMO, and I intervened. thread course was corrected
3. a few posts (one by myself) ensued

at this point Bruce (I can't recall if he is a moderator or not) suggested this should be taken offline. Bruce did not object to the initial post (and neither do I) but it reached a point he believed this became of little relevance to the list. Bruce is entitled to his opinion and is entitled to ask for the thread to be taken offline even if he is not a moderator. no one is ordering you to do so. Bruce is expressing an opinion and making a request. you can oblige or not. we hope that list members can sort this out by themselves without the need to start moderating individuals

this is - as mentioned above - my opinion, not that of the combined moderator team

I hope this helps

So here's my explanation:

I thought this is relevant to the Oils because
1-Mr. Garrett was on the board of Greenpeace in the past
2-It's in Australia
3-it's an environmental issue. This is the type of stuff that the Oils songs were about. Could be wrong, but I imagine Jim M. and/or Rob H. could be penning a song about this as we speak.

So do we stray away from this kind of thing because we don't want to make anybody mad, but weren't the Oils songs about confronting certain issues that pop music, for the most part, wouldn't face? I can tolerate people disagreeing with me. It's a fascinating debate to hear the other side of. Where do we draw the line when we try to tailor the natural world to our needs and wants? Within what limits, and what ramifications are possible? Are we supposed to talk about Pete's head wax instead?

That's how I felt, at least. If it isn't acceptable to bring this up, I'd like the moderator to tell me, and I won't bug any of you about it.

Genetic modification has its risks, and must be carefully studied and regulated like so many other technologies that make the modern world possible, but everything worthwhile involved in building civilizations involves judicious risk-taking.
