Wow.  This is the funniest thing I’ve read since somebody lambasted Paul Simon for his “Graceland” album, on the basis that Graceland was a white-owned slaveholding estate (!) and that "co-opting” the African choral groups for the album was a perpetuation of a white-supremacy attitude, and Simon supposedly calmly replied, “Do you know what a metaphor is?”
BTW, some of us older Workers may remember Velikovsky, whose woo-woo book Worlds in Collision was very popular in the late 60’s/early 70’s, in which he postulated that Biblical events could be explained by a series of billiard-ball-like collisions and interactions between the Earth and its neighbors.  One of the claims was that the Red Sea parted for Moses because the Earth stopped spinning on its axis.  Carl Sagan, in one of his earliest stages as a public intellectual, organized a symposium for scientific examination of Velikovsky’s claims (which was lambasted by other scientists at the time, who felt that it gave Velikovsky more publicity than his ideas deserved).  One of the papers calculated what would happen if the Earth did stop spinning.  It’s been many years since I read it, but I recall that the calculation showed that the amount of kinetic energy released would cause the Earth to melt. – Beth

Not quite sure what to make of this one:

"There comes a time in every American’s life when he or she must select a political identity. America not exactly being a land of subtlety, there are only two choices. Should I be a selfish, greedy asshole who refuses to give one solitary shit about other human beings? Or should I be a naïve, idealistic weenie who is too attached to the idea of being a good person to ever get my hands dirty by participating in the real world? Fortunately, there is no middle ground.

"If there is any other country in the world that aspires to America’s reductive cowboy mentality, it is Australia. Judging by the output of Midnight Oil, this must drive Australian liberals absolutely batty  ...."
