Hi Jeff

I sent this out to Tom a few days ago and it explains my position.

The circa '86 Oils music book indeed transcribes "don't let it rain" which of course makes sense within the context of the song. In most of my bootleg versions, particularly the ones from mid 1980 up to the '81 jj concert he certainly seems to be screaming "don't let it raaaaaaaaaaiiin" were he holds rain for a very long time as opposed to earlier live versions which are similar to the studio version. I've always heard the Head Injuries version to be "don't let me die", so much so that when I bought the music book on its release back in the day, and never having heard any other version of the song at that point, I couldn't understand why it was transcribed as "don't let it rain". My theory is Pete toyed with both lines (I have a demo were he sings rain and another where I hear die) and the line sung in the studio for the album (or at least the vocal take deemed the best) was "don't let me die".

Try as I might, I can't hear "don't let it rain" even remotely on the Head Injuries version. I'd be interested to hear what others hear. I could of course be wrong all these years.

Definitely "Don't let it rain", as the the official songbook. Pretty clear
on some live versions too.

I think the part you are talking about is when he screams 'don't let it

It's a song about driving up the east coast of australia to surf and tour
around.

They could hold it at ANZ / QE2 stadium where they had the M1 concert a
few years ago. They held the Commonwealth Games there as well so it's plenty
big enough. Show grounds would be available as well as any number of venues
around SE Qld e.g. Gold Coast show grounds where they hold the big day out.
I'm sure something will be organised because it's going to be needed for
those people affected. Whether the Oils play or not is another thing but it
would be a nice silver lining in what at the moment is a very dark cloud.

You're spot on. I can see Powderfinger reforming for a gig on the
riverstage already...

Can't help but ponder though:

Indonesian tsunami = Wave Aid
Headline act: Midnight Oil

Black Saturday bush fires = Sound Relief
Headline act: Midnight Oil

Brisbane floods......................?

Here's hoping the potential cyclone they're talking about doesn't
eventuate, we don't need that as well!

Chin up Brizzos! This too, will pass!
