The image of a bar fight using a broken bottle is what came to mind, but I couldn't imagine something like that being a common enough occurence to have entered the modern vernacular!  Thanks for clearing that up...

It's a growing problem in areas here where a person in a bar uses their glass as a weapon and smashes it into another person, usually into the face. Hence, someone is 'glassed', or is the victim of a 'glassing.'
 
You can imagine the injuries which result.
 
There's a movement in areas where it's a problem to phase out glass and use plastic instead.
