I know exactly what you mean. I love Underwater, but it would have
been better if they kept it for Redneck Wonderland where it would have
fitted comfortably on. I may copy your lead and make my own tracklist
up without those 2 tracks, stick One too many times onto my b-side
collection and add Underwater around track 4 or 5 on Redneck.

REM have suffered badly from bad tracklisting. Up is a great album,
but has that terribly slow starter that sets the tone. If you change
the tracklisting around the result is quite astounding.

Thought I'd try it on the train yesterday - chopped Underwater off the
front and One too Many Times out of the middle, and gave the resulting
"album" a listen - and it's entirely changed my perception of Breathe.
It flows better, doesn't put me off at the very start, and overall
feels much rockier than I remember the album being. The mix is still
horribly muddy, but I have a few albums from that era that suffer the
same problem ("Finn", in particular).

So, just goes to show how easy it is to turn something good into
something people hate by making one or two small mistakes.

Going back over previous posts, One Too Many Times pops up more often
than any other Oils song on peoples worst Oils song list.
Taking it out of the album, and making it a 12 track would make
wonders for the album flow. Putting it bang slap in the middle of the
album really spoils it for me. Of course the worst Oils track still
trumphs most of the crap out here today.
