As some of you may remember, I met my husband on Powderworks, back in 1996. Midnight Oil was so much a part of how we met and who we both were, that when we split in '04 I didn't listen to a single Oils song for several years. I just couldn't.
But as evidence that time is a great healer, late last year I heard Blue Sky Mine on the radio (we have an indie station here in Vermont that occasionally plays MO) and it caused such a sudden ache in me - not heartache, but the realization that I missed that music so much. It was time.
I went to my CD rack to survey the damage (you divorcees know what I mean). I had left everything behind except what we had duplicates of: Breathe, RW, BSM, Place, RSIS, Capricornia. No Head Injuries! No Species! I didn't even have Diesel & Dust, for crying out loud.
I went to Amazon to rebuild. I was delighted to find that a couple of pleasant surprises had debuted during my hiatus, including something called Flat Chat.
It arrived in the mail yesterday, and today on my way home from work I popped it in my car's CD player. Only The Strong came blasting out, but not anything like I remember it sounding - 100 times better! It was so clear and fresh it sounded like they were right in the car with me. And then into one of my all time favorites, Progress - and when they ripped into Hercules I could feel my soul beating against the inside of my body, trying to get out. This stuff is too good.
All those old favorites remastered like that - what a serious treat. I'm glad I found my way back.
