Go for something like this from Creative - you can also plug an auxillary input (such as a tape player) and record them into digital form. I have been using it for years.

This is an external USB plug in, but there are also ones you can buy for internal desktop. It comes with a program that allows the sound to be tricked and modified with an equalizer and format converter.
