The poll results (including mine) I saw all said yes to whether or not this group should continue, and I think it's a no-brainer. I haven't been able to read through the whole onslaught of powderworks emails that just happened, so I'm sorry if I'm repeating anything that's already been said.........
Even if the Oils aren't together as they once were, they still exist, in a sense, and have a legacy. Since Pete left, there still has been releases ("Best of Both Worlds", and "Flat Chat," which left me kinda flat, but whatever), a couple books (Rob's book, and the "Beds are Burning" bio). I'm sure there will be more releases and books to come (An Oil's box set maybe, more live recordings, or maybe remasters of their albums). There's Pete's political career to talk about, Bones's new endeavors to talk about, and also, Rob, Jim, and Martin still are making music together (and separately, too).......... and I'm sure whatever they come up
with (as the "Remainder Men" as I've heard them referred to as), will have enough of the Midnight Oil heart and soul to it, to keep the flame going. And who knows........I'm not getting my hopes that high, but they may play together again someday (hopefully by 2012). I have a feeling that it might happen, and that the WaveAid show wasn't the last of the wine.
I have mostly been a lurker myself, but have had a few good conversations with some of youse, (y'all know who you are) and I've benefitted from the information I got here, as well, esp. when I found out here about the date and venue of the first and sadly, only, Oils concert I went to about 5 years ago. I've also been lucky enough to win a DVD of the WaveAid show, that somebody here was nice enough to offer up for grabs. There's no reason for this list to end, not just for my benefit, but for everybody else, too.
.......and even now I like to think that the best is still yet to
come.
