Dear Powderworkers, (the Oils never separated politics
from their music. Why should we?)

A quick note of encouragement for the protestors this
weekend. You may have read Jo talking about the
protest and Peter G. speaking.

Here's a bit from The Melbourne Age BEFORE the Friday
rally: (I haven't heard any post-rally quotes from
Peter G. or others)

Melbourne joins world in rally against war
February 14 2003
By Angela O'Connor

A rally against a war in Iraq is expected to draw tens
of thousands of people to central Melbourne today.
Marches will also be held in all Australian capitals
and some regional cities this weekend, with others
planned for around the world expected to take the
number of anti-war protesters into the millions.

The march, from the State Library at 5pm, will proceed
to Federation Square, where the final speaker will be
activist and former Midnight Oil singer Peter Garrett.

Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne Peter Watson,
Democrat Senator Natasha Stott Despoja, Greens senator
Bob Brown and union leader Martin Kingham will also
address the rally, organised by the Victorian Peace
Network.

Mr Garrett said yesterday that the case had not been
made for war. "People feel substantial disquiet and
resentment at Australia's commitment," he said.

"The Prime Minister has said he would not commit
Australian troops to the war if he thought nuclear
weapons were going to be used, but it is questionable
whether he would be advised.

"Modern war has a serious impact on civilian
populations and the environment . . . It is the
innocent, the women and children and military
personnel, who suffer the consequences."

Trades Hall Council secretary Leigh Hubbard signalled
likely industrial disruption if war eventuated.'

In Melbourne there were 150,000 to 200,000 protesters.

In Brisbane some are guessing 2,000 will turn up, but
there's a really encouraging feeling around. Maybe
10,000 might show. (Numbers, mere numbers...)

God knows it's been fun.
