If your definition of anti-Americanism is being against the government's
policies, that's one thing. But if you mean not liking Americans per se, then
I can attest that the members of Midnight Oil wouldn't subscribe to that
theory. That's just plain stupid, and this is not a group of stupid blokes.
That's like saying "All French people are snotty". The Parisiennes don't have
much patience for tourists, but then again, some do. It all depends on the
people involved, and the attitude they bring to the encounter. I know that
for a fact.
I also know for a fact that several - if not all - of the guys in Midnight
Oil do very much enjoy the company of certain Americans. Maybe these
Americans are atypical - perhaps a bit more cosmopolitan than the norm - but
the blokes who made up Midnight Oil are Sydneysiders, and world travellers
besides. They wouldn't have much in common with anyone who was narrow-minded
and xenophobic (i.e., mistrustful of foreigners).
So if the question was WWTOD ("What Would the Oils Do?"), the answer is: take
each person for who they show themselves to be, and don't make snap
judgements based on their land of origin.
Now, can we stop squabbling over this?
P.S. Kate, well-said, as usual. Think global, act local. Shop the local
Greenmarket, or start one if need be. Patronize neighborhood mom-and-pop
shops if you can. Barter for goods is even better, bringing it all down to
that hippie grassroots level ("I'll cut your hair, you help me fix my
computer").
Practice acts of random kindness, and always consider when making a decision:
what is the best choice for ALL of us, not just now, but in the future?
