Greetings workers! I thought I would come out of lurk mode to offer this =
posting - and since it is now Sunday afternoon - and this event took =
place on Friday night and nobody else has posted about it - it maybe =
that I was the only worker who saw this brief appearance (three songs) =
of MO - without PG. On Friday there was a benefit night for the drummer =
from "Mental as anything" who lost his house in the bushfires on =
Christmas day. The night included appearances by Richard Clapton, Ian =
Moss, Johnny Diesel, Tim Friedman (Whitlams), The Cockroaches, Ganga =
jang, Machinations, Austentayshus and an unpublicised appearance by Rob, =
Jim, Bones and Martin (PG is/was over in Western Australia doing =
something else). Anyhow the fab four appeared on stage with Rob offering =
a quick explanation as to what they were doing there, then they lurched =
into an awesome instrumental version of Mosquito March, followed by =
Wedding Cake Island (played with Guitars only) and finished with Rob =
singing When the Generals Talk. It was quite awesome cos they just =
walked on stage - plugged in and away they went - a rare glimpse at the =
band without the big fellow up front.
On other matters - I'd like to add my two cents worth to the Capricornia =
discussion. Yes - I received mine early last week from Whammo - =
including the Golden Age Promo. The album is excellent and possibly even =
better than expected having heard the songs being played at all the gigs =
over the past 15 months or so. Listening to it, the thought comes to my =
mind that Jim was once quite famously quoted as saying that any album =
which a band produces is only a permanent record of what a band sounded =
like at that particular time. This is quite true when I think of all the =
discussions over the past months about RSITSS, RW, PWAPC or any other MO =
album - they are all different and all equally brilliant - no matter =
which one is your particular favourite. To me this album is like all the =
rest (and I have been listening and going to gigs since 1977), it is =
another fantastic group of songs written and recorded by the greatest =
rock and roll band ever. We can only wish that the album is the great =
success which it deserves to be and that it will then inspire the Oils =
to keep going - to record another album and another after that and =
another after that - there could never be too many - and in my mind - =
the best Midnight Oils song ever - is the one which has not been =
released yet!
Back to lurkin,
Cheers,
Richard
