I was looking over the list of Oils Live posted a while back. In 93 we
saw them at the Ohio State Fair (w/Ziggy Marley and Hothouse Flowers).
Coincidentally, I was preg with Alan. Maybe that's why he's a worker
now. Anyway, the state Highway Patrol (otherwise "county Mounties")
always provide security at the fair and there are plenty of them.
There's a good wide space between the last row of seats and the back
wall in the building where they have the concerts. ZM and HF played
short sets and then our Oils got on - and after about 3 or 4 songs, Pete
motioned for the house lights and looked out over the audience. We all
turned around to see half the county Mounties on the grounds lined up
against the back wall, nodding & tapping a boot here & there, attracted
in by the music which is clearly audible outside the building. After
the song ended, Pete asked them if they were there to arrest them, which
amused the Mounties, and the show went on, with more and more Mounties
trickling in the whole time. What made it even more funny is that this
fair is the kind where you get almost all country-western has-beens, a
few bland acts like so help me Pat Boone, and a token gospel or R&B act
that might have been selling records 10 years ago. You'd expect the
Mounties to be rockin' out to George Jones around here, certainly not
the Oils. - Beth Curran
