If 72% of people voted and there are about 50 million people in France who
can vote and Le Pen got about 18% of the vote:

My dodgy mathematics work that out to be 6.5 million people who voted for Le
Pen.

That seems like quite a few to me. In England we consider we have a major
problem with the National Front and they only got 0.2% of the vote and only
40% of people voted, this makes about 38,000 people.
